Just driving by Sharks cove early Tuesday December 8th you could feel the "Eddie Would Go".
The roads and traffic were backed up for miles, people even slept on the beach the night before and people were being dropped off by the busload.
It was 40 dollars to park anywhere even close, and here’s the view as you walk past the famous church which has become such a visible symbol in shots of the bay. No guys that’s not Dane Gudauskas in the forefront , though I was almost fooled for a minute too..
Cliff scene was crazy here is a shot where you can see how crowded the whole beach actually was.
The view looking out at the point was really cool , and even the in between waves looked very inviting from afar.
Chile’s Ramone Navarros Quiver – consisted of two 9-6 MBG models , one a quad and a 9-0 , He would end up winning the Monster energy drop award and 10,000 for the biggest completed wave of the day, a perfect 100 points and another 2 grand for first place . Ramone’s pregnant wife who is Ok now, was slightly injured by the movie camera on the beach . He told me later, Jeez "I surf 20 footers and nothing happens to me and my wife gets bonked by a camera on the beach". That sucks.
The whole beach was like a movie set, uh oh watch out for that camera.
If your an mma fan you might of even recognized Keith Jardean "the dean of mean " among the crowd.
The line up was no less of a crazy place, here the guys scratch over one.
This kid probably grabbed at least 5 broken boards.
Here kelly sends a text to his mom before his last heat.
Since nobody was allowed in the water, there was actually a line to use the showersd in the midday heat, that was the only way to cool down from the scorching heat.
The waves down the beach were no less scenic or scary looking.
He is always being a gooffball in photos , heres his bay pass, he doesnt look to scared in it, whats wrong with him?
Here Kala who was in a heat with Kelly checks in to the competitors tent before he paddles out. Note Rabbit and Randy in the forefront as well.
Eddie Rothman, was also on hand to support his team and his son Makua who was also competing.
Here kelly gets a bit of peace before he paddles out for his second and final heat , he would be beat only by greg long who caught 4 great waves in a pulsing last heat of the day.
The crowd would go wild when the guys would bounce through the flats and set up for the shore break certain death pull in. Here Andy irons does it and you can see a fan claim the closed fist in the front.
Andy next frame.
Mike Ho preparing to do battle with his choice of weapons on the roof!
With brother Derek and other family on the beach , Mike had plenty of support. Mike is actually actually is the reason why all these guys started pulling into the shore break and getting the crowd all psyched!!
Kelly and Kala both navigate trying to get through this one on their way out.
None other than "Carvin Marvin Foster ". It was real cool getting to see legends like this among crowd.
Not sure about this guys hat but the list of competitors is phenomenal.
Kelly chose to ride his 9-6 from the last Eddie he won , he had a new 9-0 available to him , but i think the sentimental value of winning a former Eddie event on this one made it special. here he changes out of his jersey , while "click" goes the photos of the phone cams . It did him right again, he pulled into several barrels and scored a 98 on a wave as well as placed second overall.
Ramone's boards made it out alive.. he said the quad really gave him some extra speed once he came off the bottom.
Its was all about making it to the shore break during Kelly's heat, to excite the crowd, here he is on his way to the inside.
Here we go.
The cliffs were crawling with people today, it almost looked like those aama crabs that you see coming out of the rocks.
The beach remained closed to swimmers after the event, you can see why.
The day went incredibly well for all , and with the spirits of Waimea valley watching through the trees, The Aikau family couldn't of been more proud!
